About the person
Charly Bosch, born 1965 grew up in the Lake Constance region, south Germany. He is a technology inventor living in Mallorca. In 2013 he acquired the rights to the Loryc car brand. The former manufacturer based in Palma de Mallorca built around 100 race cars in the 1920s. His plan is to revive the brand as a maker of electric cars handmade on the island.

19.11.2015 Mallorca, near Llucmajor, early morning. Together with a technician Charly Bosch is on his way to a test drive. We are moving east, towards the still low sun. Mallorca’s bucolic landscape is passing behind tinted windows. The van is pulling a trailer with final prototype of the new LORYC Electric Speedster. A piece of advanced car technic that Bosch and his team have been putting together in the last 10 months.
Q: What made you want to build your own car?
CB: I was searching for a classic car for myself to drive on the island. A simple car with a low tech engine. That brought me to the original LORYC from 1923. It was big fun but the engine broke down twice in a row. There I stood and wondered what to do.
I have been involved in Technik all my life but I had little knowledge about the combustion engine and no interest in learning about a technology from yesterday. So I took out the old engine and turned the original LORYC into an electric car. The transformation took me four days and four nights in my workshop. At sunrise I took it to a first roll-out to see if it was working. I drove 84 kilometres until the battery went down. I was very satisfied that day and realised how much fun electric driving has to offer.
Q: Building an electric car is easy?
CB: Everything you need to know one can find online. All the knowledge is public. Electric engines are not very complicated, they are more or less like 100 years ago. You need an engine, a battery, a controller and some cables, that’s about it.
Q: Since 30 years we are being told that electro mobility is tomorrow’s technology.
CB: There has simply not been enough research been done in the last 100 years. Electric powered vehicles were on the streets long before the combustion engine. The electric Technik has been relatively dormant since then. If we had put a bunch of talented engineers onto the topic, electric jet engines or electro powered rockets could be shooting our satellites into outer space since a long time. The oil era is coming to its end and a lot will happen in electro mobility in the next 30 years.
Q: The first street cars were electric powered and later the combustion engine took over, why this happened?
CB: Detroit as car city had started with the manufacturing of battery powered electric street cars. These were fitted with lead batteries and an engine, a pretty simple solution. In the first sketches of Henry Ford’s T Model were plans for an electric version. Later he switched to the combustion engine, the rest is history and the people in the cities are suffering from respiratory health issues. Interestingly, the combustion engine boom started with the introduction of the electric starters. Getting the cylinders moving by hand was not the easiest thing to do.
Q: With the LORYC Electric project you are bridging the old and the new. Latest High Tech in a 1920 handmade Aluminum body.
I wanted to build an essential Auto, reduced to the Wesentliche (the essential). A Loryc is not a car really. It is fun and a special driving experience. It is made for people that are interested in special technology and like to get around corners quickly. Driving the LORYC Electric is a new experience. Acceleration goes directly onto the wheels with no delay.
The LORYC, the Tesla, they do not have gearshifts. That means no mountains of gear wheels, less wear, less friction and much more driving fun.
The LORYC is like no other car. The unpainted Aluminum body is hand whetted and riveted. The spoke wheels come from a maker in Italy that is like LORYC from the 1920. The engine was made specially for us.
Q: How much Mallorca is really inside your electric Speedster?
CB: I wanted it to be the essential car and have it handmade in Mallorca. We manufacture in Mallorca, it is a very manual process that makes each LORYC a unique piece. The whetting of the Aluminum body is done by hammering the material into shape. Each hit with the hammer leaves a unique stamp in the material. There are over 1,000 hours of work in our product. The manufacturing process is in many ways the same like when the first Loryc race cars were built in 1920.
Q: In Motorsport the phonetics and smell play an important role. How does a near silent retro looking electric car fit in the there?
CB: Since the first test drives of the LORYC prototype I find my 600 hp Porsche pretty lame. Our standard LORYC engine has only 25hp, yet offering a more direct and dynamic picking up of right foot commands. The lack of noise allows the driver a closer rapport with the street and one is able to engage more with the environment you are in.
